Mental health is a serious issue on a worldwide scale. Fortunately, the dialogue regarding mental health has grown in recent years, notably among celebrities, contributing to demystifying these challenges. Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is one such ailment that is gaining traction, mostly due to the best efforts of those who are living with it.

As per the National Institute of Mental Health, the illness is defined by a persistent pattern of fluctuating moods, behavior, and self-image, which can manifest as irrational and impulsive behavior and relationship difficulties. Nevertheless, it is manageable in a variety of ways, with one critical remedy being its de-stigmatization. The following is a list of celebrities/characters who have discussed their experiences or are assumed to be living with BPD by online resources. Additionally, we shall examine how people cope with it.

Pete Davidson

Pete Davidson is a contemporary comedian and actor primarily known for his bombastic style and performances on Saturday Night Live. Labeled with BPD a few years ago, he said to Variety how he was so confused all the time, and just assumed there was something awry all the time and didn’t know how to cope with it before diagnosis.

He has since worked diligently to manage his disease with DBT and medication therapy, as well as to de-stigmatize it for others. As per The Mighty, in addition to publicly disclosing his ailment, Davidson’s semi-autobiographical film The King of Staten Island covers the difficulties associated with mental health disorders.

He has been attempting to live a healthy lifestyle since 2017 and had entered treatment in 2019 to resolve his mental health. Noting how he occasionally feels the need to be “readjusted,” he has lauded rehab for being a very strong, powerful thing in treating his mental health.

Darrell Hammond

Darrell Hammond, another comedy star, was on Saturday Night Live from 1999 until 2009. Known for his great Alex Trebek and Bill Clinton impersonations, Variety reports that Hammond had a darker past that included addiction, childhood trauma, suicide attempts, and years of diagnosis, including BPD.

To shed light on his challenges, he published the memoir God, If You’re Not Up There, I’m F—– in 2011, succeeded by the documentary Cracked Up in 2019. Despite his difficulties, Hammond’s newest works demonstrate that he hasn’t lost his good sense of humor.

He also shared some of the insight he has gained from his mental health journey with others. As per the NY Post, he stated that he became convinced that the way he was behaving was better classified as a mental trauma rather than a mental illness, “that’s the ‘Hallelujah’ chorus of my whole life.”

Elizabeth Wurtzel

Writer Elizabeth Wurtzel was best known for her book “Prozac Nation: Young and Depressed in America.” She sadly died of cancer in January 2020. She wrote her memoir while she was only 26 years old.

Wurtzel struggled with major mental health concerns, but via her stories, she was able to initiate a discourse with the public about these common struggles, albeit BPD was never named.

Doug Ferrari

Doug Ferrari, sometimes known as “Dougzilla,” is a writer and comedian from San Francisco. He was homeless for a period due to his issues with mental illness and addiction before seeking treatment and returning to the comedy stage.

Doug has been candid about his BPD diagnosis, claiming that it was a contributing factor in his being homeless for a while. He has been involved with the homeless charity since his return.

The below celebrities are frequently referenced in publications as having a borderline personality disorder, but they have never publicly stated that they have been diagnosed with the illness, and others in the media have just suggested that they show characteristics of the disorder without truly having it.

Vincent van Gogh

Van Gogh is presumed to have suffered from borderline personality disorder; he exhibited symptoms most consistent with BPD: mood swings, impulsivity, self-destructive behavior, an unbalanced self-image, authority conflicts, fear of abandonment, and other complex relationships.

In his book, Starry Starry Night: The Life and Psychiatric History of Vincent van Gogh, Erwin van Meekeren, a Dutch psychiatrist suggested that van Gogh’s behavior was most likely explained by BPD. Dr. John G. Gunderson, a specialist on borderline personality disorder, agreed that van Gogh’s longings for love, his abrupt mood changes, most notably his apparently unjustified and unpredictable rages, and his trend of impulsive acts, such as substance abuse, are all recognized aspects of the borderline disorder. Whether or whether Van Gogh was borderline, this provides a good lens through which to evaluate his tumultuous life.

Jim Carrey

Despite his reputation for making people laugh, Jim Carrey has been unusually candid about his struggles with depression in interviews and on social media, but he has never announced a diagnosis of BPD.

In recent times, the comedian and actor have turned to paint as a peaceful and expressive discipline, sharing most of his work on Instagram.

Madison Bailey

Madison Bailey, a teenage star from the current television series Outer Banks, is another celebrity who suffers from BPD. Since being diagnosed with the condition at the age of 17, she has been attempting to unravel the mystery “day by day.” When counseling did not work, Bailey shifted her focus to self-education and recognizing her personal triggers, which she used to assist manage her condition.

Interacting with others has been another critical part of learning to deal with her disability. According to The Might, she claimed, “I’m able to effortlessly put myself in other people’s situations and provide genuine empathy.”

Bailey, as a core part of Generation Z, is undoubtedly working hard to provide a face for young folk’s mental health difficulties, which is critical for de-stigmatizing these concerns.

Angelina Jolie

She enrolled herself into a psychiatric facility voluntarily, claiming to be experiencing homicidal and suicidal ideations. Suicidal fantasies are a significant feature of BPD. As per her biography, she was brought up by an estranged father, which has been connected to the development of BPD. Angelina’s mother perceived her to be too similar to the guy who left her and thus withheld love and compassion from her, putting her in the care of numerous babysitters,  nannies, and caretakers throughout her youth. Angelina also describes having obsessive crushes and engaging in drug use. Substance misuse and dependence on others are also two prominent signs of borderline personality disorder. When Jolie was discharged from the institute into which she had self-inflicted the sickness, she was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder.

Brandon Marshall

Brandon Marshall is a wide receiver in the National Football League who has played for the Chicago Bears, Denver Broncos, Seattle Seahawks, New York Jets, and other teams. With 21 catches, he owns the NFL distinction for most grabs and receptions in a single game.

Marshall is one of just a few well-known people who has been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and has openly disclosed his condition.

In reality, he has been vocal about mental illness and has sought to raise awareness about it. He is the creator of Project 365, an organization dedicated to spreading mental health awareness.

Britney Spears

She had an eating disorder, that manifests insecurity and confused, negative body image, all of which are related to a borderline personality disorder. Britney, like Angelina Jolie, has struggled with substance abuse. Britney Spears, like Doug Ferrari, may exhibit tremendous anger and experience strong mood swings. It is entirely likely that she suffers from an undiagnosed borderline personality disorder.

Ariel (The Tiny Mermaid)

Ariel is frequently unsettled, shifting her emotions when events do not go her way. She has low self-esteem, she aspires to be a human person, she has a highly conflicted relationship with her father, and she occasionally pushes those boundaries. She also demonstrates impulsive and self-destructive conduct when she meets Ursula to transform into a human, which is also a drastic and unpredictable identity transformation. Finally, her adoration for Prince Eric is apparent. She fantasizes about what he could be and make herself a suitable partner for him before she truly understands him.

According to Psychodynamic Theory, there were difficulties in her very early parental relationships. The upheaval produced by her mother’s death, combined with her father’s behaviors of non-acceptance, indifference, rejection, and emotional/verbal abuse, may have contributed to her developing this illness.

Ralph (Wreck-It-Ralph 2)

As is the case with the majority of borderline individuals, he exhibits truly wild mood swings. He is incredibly clingy to Vanellope, as she is his only true friend, and goes to great lengths to make her happy. After mistakenly turning off her game, he comes up with an idea to actually rescue it by traveling to the Internet. However, when the potential of Vanellope moving to a new game arises, he becomes extremely agitated and excessively envious of her new fresh buddy Shank, a female racer in this game. In actuality, he goes to tremendous and dangerous measures to ensure she cannot remain here by infecting the game by infesting a virus in the game. This can be triggered by the well-known Fear of Abandonment that several borderlines are all too familiar with.

Azula (Avatar: The Last Airbender)

Avatar: The Last Airbender has developed into my personal favorite program of many, and there is no reason to believe Princess Azula of the Fire Nation suffers from BPD. Despite her unwavering commitment to becoming one of the show’s most major adversaries, we have always maintained that there is a far deeper, more overlooked aspect to her personality and general nature.

Azula, like a lot of other borderlines, is fearful of desertion, most likely as a result of her mother’s insistence. This condition was well demonstrated when her friends, Mai and Ty Lee, abandoned her at the Boiling Rock. Additionally, this may be indicative of having problematic relationships. There are numerous instances when she loses her composure and allows her wrath to reign in battle. Additionally, she yells at her father. “You can’t treat me personally such as this! You cant treat me personally like Zuko!”  displaying her low self-esteem. Additional evidence of her low self-esteem may be found in the comics anytime Azula approaches her mother and questions her. ” Tell me personally, mom did you must have a daughter that is new your final one turned into this kind of monster?!”  Azula, on the other hand, is fairly intense. She’s only had one romantic interest: Chan, as well as what did she mention a few moments after their very first kiss? ” Together, you and I’ll be the strongest few within the world! We shall dominate our planet!”

BoJack Horseman (BoJack Horseman)

He was a celebrity on a hugely popular television show in the 1990s, in which he actually exhibits BPD. BoJack Horseman has a record for physical and psychological abuse, which he endured at the hands of their parents. This traumatization drove him to a life of substance abuse and irresponsible behavior. He cycles between despair and madness and possesses a continually changing sense of self. Bojack has been in numerous troubled relationships and suffers from anxiety. He may be impulsive, resulting in situations in which he appears unconcerned about the prospective consequences.
