When the body is not performing well, the brain cannot either. At The Balance, this foundational connection is at the core of what we do. We know that treatments are not optimal if the internal body is out of balance.

A key part of our programs is the biochemical restoration: an individualised approach to helping patients return their body to an optimal state. This process can be particularly helpful when treating addiction or eating disorders. We sat down with our leading doctor and nutritionist, Dr. Indhira Ghyssaert, to discuss what a biochemical restoration is, how it’s carried out, and why it’s the best first step to any treatment program.

A biochemical restoration is a treatment approach aimed at optimising the body’s natural biochemistry without the use of drugs or alcohol. This includes lab tests to assess inflammation, hormone imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, adrenal fatigue, and gut health. Tests also screen for toxic substances like heavy metals, which often accumulate due to substance abuse. These tests comes from blood work, a sample of stool, and a sample of hair. “We look at all the substances that permit us to function properly. Everything in our body is optimal at a certain level, we look at all of the elements,” explains Dr Indhira Ghyssaert. She goes on: “We look deep into the flora, or the microbiome to see what proportion of good and bad bacteria we have in the gut. The metabolites in the flora may a major role in brain function. They affect the neurotransmitters in the mind and this has a huge affect on mood and health of the mind.” It restores the balance of vitamins, proteins, hormone levels, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants. It brings the brain and body back into tandem.

The process of restoring these internal parts of the body can be achieved in more than one way. If there is a more severe deficiency, a doctor may use an infusion or injection direct into the blood stream. For eating disorders and addictions, this approach can be extremely helpful in the healing process. The slower, more sustainable route is through a nutrition and supplement plan. A biochemical restoration is an utterly unique experience to each person that receives it.

At The Balance, a biochemical restoration is a signature part of our treatment program. We believe in healing the internal while we evolve the external treatment. A patient will not reap the full benefits of various treatment methods and mindfulness programs if the body is not functioning optimally. Dr. Ghyssaert notes: “We often see people struggling with brain fog. If a person has bad brain fog, they can’t concentrate properly. If you can’t concentrate properly, how is a patient going to have an efficient session with a psychotherapist? A biochemical restoration prepares the mind and body for treatment.”

When it comes to addiction treatment, we often see severe nutritional deficiencies. A biochemical restoration is used in tandem with the early detox phase to help curb cravings and reduce mood swings for a smoother recovery process. Addictive substances significantly alter neurotransmitter levels, such as dopamine and serotonin, which are responsible for feelings of pleasure and reward. The biochemical restoration balances the microbiome, and starts to heal those neurotransmitters that are dependent on substances to achieve the same effects.

In eating disorders, we often see a lack of electrolytes and protein deficiencies, as well as inflammation in the thyroid and liver. A biochemical restoration brings down the inflammation, while building up strength in the bones and heart. An infusion can be extremely helpful in these cases to speed up the process, but long term changes are necessary to heal the body internally. We give patients the information and tools for long term healing.

A biochemical restoration seeks to bring the internal body back into balance off the back of an in-depth assessment that looks at inflammation, hormone imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, adrenal fatigue, and gut health. The process of balancing can be done faster through infusions or injections direct into the blood stream. This is particularly helpful for addicts or people struggling with eating disorders because there is often an issue with malabsorption. A slower, more sustainable way to balance is through a nutrition and supplement plan. This process aims to restore the brain-body connection, and prepares a patient for other treatments. A biochemical restoration is utterly unique to you and your assessment. It is not something that should be copied. At The Balance, a biochemical restoration is a core part of our treatment plans.
