At The Balance, we believe that for true healing to happen we have to treat the whole person. This is why our approach incorporates both mental, physical, and emotional well-being. We know that the gut-brain connection plays a crucial role in mood, cognitive function, and overall mental health. That’s why we partner top doctors and nutritionists with personal chefs to carry out meal plans that can restore the body from the inside out. One of our head chefs, Maria Salinas, was also a head chef at the Paris Olympics 2024 this past summer. We sat down with Maria to get the smoothie recipe that got these athletes performance ready.

Ingredients:

  • 2 bananas
  • A little yogurt (preferably high-protein Greek)
  • 300g of blueberries
  • A handful of walnuts
  • Oats (one cup)
  • Ice cubes
  • Oat milk (adjust to preferred consistency)
  • A pinch of cinnamon
  • A splash of vanilla extract
  • Optional: honey for sweetness

Instructions:

  1. Combine the bananas, blueberries, walnuts, and oats in a blender.
  2. Add a scoop of high-protein yoghurt for an extra boost of creaminess and protein.
  3. Pour in oat milk until you reach your desired consistency.
  4. Toss in a few ice cubes to keep it cool and refreshing.
  5. Sprinkle in a little cinnamon and add a splash of vanilla extract for flavour depth.
  6. If you like a sweeter taste, add a touch of honey.
  7. Blend until smooth and creamy, then serve chilled. Enjoy!

“This is a smoothie that is perfect at any hour of the day,” Maria shares. “For breakfast, lunch, or as a dessert after dinner.” Whether serving world-class athletes or clients at The Balance, Maria understands how essential the right nutrients are for both mental and physical performance.

Maria made this smoothie for the US Olympic team at the 2024 Paris Olympics after tough training sessions. “I’d give this to the team after their intensive workouts. It’s filled with vitamins, minerals, high protein, and carbs. It helps replenish the body after movement,” she explains. The team couldn’t get enough. “After they had it, they’d feel amazing, and they would chase me down, asking for more!” Maria always kept a batch in the fridge, and every day, it would be empty.

Food is more than just fuel for the body—it’s also essential for the health of the mind. “When you don’t feel good, this is my smoothie for the soul,” says Maria. Nutrient-rich ingredients like blueberries, walnuts, and oats provide antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and fiber, all supporting brain function and improving mood. “When your body feels like it’s lacking something, this is my favourite thing to make,” Maria shares. And we believe it’s the perfect blend to support healing from the inside out.

At The Balance, we understand that consuming foods directly impacts our emotional and mental well-being. This smoothie, with its mix of vitamins and minerals, helps not only to replenish the body but also to support mental clarity and emotional resilience. Whether you’re recovering from a workout or just looking for a way to soothe your mind, this smoothie offers a powerful combination of nutrition and comfort.
