At The Balance, we believe that treating mental health and addiction is not just about addressing symptoms but understanding the root causes. Our approach is guided by the study of neurobiology, the science of how the brain and nervous system function. This understanding allows us to develop a personalized program that treats each client’s brain, body, and spirit. We sat down with our Director of Psychotherapy, Gita Chaudhuri, to discuss what this concept means, why it is so important, and how The Balance uses it as the foundation of our integrative approach.

Neurobiology is the study of the nervous system, focusing on how neurons (the cells in our brain and body) communicate and adapt. This communication happens through chemical signals called neurotransmitters, and it’s how we think, feel, and behave. Our neurobiology traces back to our childhood; as Gita says, “It traces all the way back to our youth. If a child has insecure bonding or attachment issues, that can create different neural pathways and patterns and affect how they connect with others.”

Neurons are constantly firing and rewiring based on experiences. As Gita states, “Neurons that fire together, wire together. In a somatic experiencing session, those neurons can change immediately.” This means that we can create new neural pathways fast, but the process of making them stronger requires time, discipline, and determination. It’s the strength of these pathways that shapes how we respond to triggers and emotions.

Understanding neurobiology is essential for treating mental health because it helps us see how the body and brain are interconnected. Mental health is not just psychological; it’s also physical. . Gita explains: “Mental health has a biology of its own. Trauma has biology. Our feelings and experiences can stay stored in the body long after they happen, and that affects the way our nervous system develops, functions, and regulates. This can manifest as tension, tumours in the stomach, or hypervigilance, for example, in a child that lived in fear for years.” She goes on, “It’s the biology we must look at when we approach treatment.”

This also incorporates the influence of genetics and epigenetics in shaping our mental health.  Gita explains, “There’s the genetics and epigenetics of our parents and history that we can feel and hold inside of us as well. Everything has implications on our body and nervous system.” This understanding allows us to take a whole-person approach to treatment, considering both past experiences and inherited tendencies.

At The Balance, we acknowledge that trauma and emotional experiences leave imprints on the brain and nervous system. We focus on addressing the entire system—mind, body, and spirit—because we believe that separating these parts limits the effectiveness of treatment. “When we use neurobiology as our basis to approach the treatment of mental health conditions, we look at the whole body,” Gita emphasizes. We understand that healing requires looking at the person from all angles, not just their symptoms.

Traditional mental health care often compartmentalized treatment into distinct parts, as Gita observes, “Previously, mental health treatment separated parts of a person and focused on treating that part. There was the medical side, the psychiatric side, and the psychological side and all three parts were their own whole rather than one-third of the same equation. It’s all meant to be together.” At The Balance, we integrate these elements to treat the whole person, with neurobiology guiding this holistic approach.

Our treatment method is designed to help people create new, healthier neural pathways and strengthen them over time. “We want to bring the nervous system back into a state of safety so that we can look at those old neural pathways and begin to change them,” Gita explains. Through techniques like somatic experiencing and other body-centered therapies, we help clients rewire their brains, move past trauma, and foster long-term healing.

We now have the technology to look at the brain and track the changes before after. We can change the brain through this approach, to develop new neuronal pathways. The effects of this approach are proven. It’s like science-based approach, ability to evolve based on each client, and unwavering compassion that makes The Balance a leader in integrative mental health treatment.

We are part of a historical evolution in mental health care. As Gita shares, “The leaders in this industry writing and researching these topics, people like Bessel Van Der Kolk, Gabor Mate, and Stephen Porges, all champion this approach. This is the future of mental health, and The Balance is in that historical evolution.”

Although this is the future we are paving, it is also a return to ancient wisdom. This approach and philosophy was used thousands of years ago, most notably in Chinese history. They has acupuncture, tai chi and other ther techniques and practices to bring the body into safety—to treat the body alongside the mind. In this way, we are returning to our true nature.

At The Balance, our neurobiological approach is at the heart of everything we do. By understanding how the brain and nervous system function, we are able to create personalized, integrative treatment plans that address the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. As Gita Chaudhuri has emphasized, healing is not just about addressing symptoms, but about rewiring the brain and supporting the entire nervous system. This holistic, science-based approach allows us to help our clients move past trauma, create new neural pathways, and achieve long-term transformation. While rooted in the latest advancements in neuroscience, our methods also draw from ancient wisdom, reflecting our belief that true healing means treating the body alongside the mind. At The Balance, we honor both the future and the past in our pursuit of mental health and well-being.
